That’s actually a really intetesting intpretation of it I hadn’t thought of. Most people seem to think Athena turned Medusa into a gorgon as punishment for defiling her temple, but thinking that she did so to protect her from being abused again is interesting and I like it!

Athena’s hands were tied. Yes, she was a powerful Goddess, but she was very much a woman in a “boys club”, and the true offending party (don’t think for a moment that Athena blamed Medusa for being raped in the temple, Athena knows better) held all the cards. There was nothing that Athena could do to punish the true criminal, and she was expected to punish Medusa by everyone else. What’s a Goddess to do when she cannot punish those who need to be punished and is expected to punish not only the truly innocent party, but her most beloved follower? Use that incredible brain power she had to protect Medusa at all costs, and of course the men would see it as punishment, to be have her beauty stripped from her and sent to live in the shadows. Medusa should have been KILLED for supposedly defiling the temple, whether she truly did or not, but she was given the gift of life, and the ability to protect herself and her daughters (who she bore thanks to Poseidon). This is why Medusa’s image was used to signify woman’s shelters and safe houses.

Medusa means “guardian; protectress”, and she was.

holy shit.

Feministic mythology is what I’m here for

DIY Cardboard Horns

From the comments section:

What sizes did you use?

I used a strap from 25cm long for the biggest circle and made them shorter for the smaller circles. They’re 1,5 cm in width, but you can always change it for different outcomes! It’s fun to experiment with it! How wider the strap is, how bigger the curve is going to be. And the cardboard is from an ice cream box, so I don’t really know how thick it is. I can only tell you that if the cardboard is too thick, you’ll see the edges through the surface, if you know what I mean  And it will be difficult to shape

… first I roll the biggest circle from a 25cm long strap. Then I take the next strap and make it a bit shorter, like 20 cm. I roll that one, glue the end and put it inside the biggest circle to let it fit in. And so on and on till you reach the middle

How to put them on hair or wigs?

I used a thin metal hairband (black) to put them on. You can make two little cuts at the base of the horns and put the hairband through them. (Not sure if I used the right words)

Did you paint the horns or plaster them?

Um, I painted the horns with a rather thick paint and used a rough brush. That way you can see the lines in the way you paint. I also painted in different layers and used three different shades of the same color to make them more epic  (as you can see, the horns are beige and more reddish around the edges)

Did you use glue?

And I just wanted to say that I used hot glue, but from a glue gun. That way I could cover up the edges from the cardboard  And indeed, make a more awesome structure!

So, it’s pretty much canon that Guinan and Riker happened at least once, right?

To this day, this is still the fucking smoothest back and forth I’ve ever whitnesed.

Honestly something that bothers me more than most things is having my compassion mistaken for naivety.

I know that another fish might eat this bullfrog right after I spend months rehabilitating it.

I know that turning a beetle back onto its legs won’t save it from falling over again when I walk away.

I know that there is no cosmic reward waiting for my soul based on how many worms I pick off a hot sidewalk to put into the mud, or how many times I’ve helped a a raccoon climb out of a too-deep trashcan.

I know things suffer, and things struggle, and things die uselessly all day long. I’m young and idealistic, but I’m not literally a child. I would never judge another person for walking by an injured bird, for ignoring a worm, or for not really caring about the fate of a frog in a pond full of, y’know, plenty of other frogs.

There is nothing wrong with that.

But I cannot cannot cannot look at something struggling and ignore it if I may have the power to help.

There is so much bad stuff in this world so far beyond my control, that I take comfort in the smallest, most thankless tasks. It’s a relief to say “I can help you in this moment,” even though they don’t understand.

I don’t need a devil’s advocate to tell me another fish probably ate that frog when I let it go, or that the raccoon probably ended up trapped in another dumpster the next night.

I know!!!! I know!!!!!!! But today I had the power to help! So I did! And it made me happy!

So just leave me alone alright thank u!!!!

THIS.

I heard a story about this, a parable I guess.

There was a big storm and a ton of starfish were washed onto the beach, stranded much further up than they could get back and beginning to bake in the post-storm sunshine. A little girl was walking down the beach, picking up starfish and throwing them back into the sea. Some guy comes up and asks her what she’s doing. “Saving the starfish,” she says.

He looks around at the huge beach and the hundreds of starfish, and says “You can’t possibly save them all. I’m afraid you’re not gonna make much of a difference.”

She throws another starfish back into the ocean, and replies “It made a difference to that one.”

Yeah, I mean, we know we can’t change all the things. But have you ever noticed how much better life is when you’re around people who change things when they can?

Kindness is a choice. Even if it’s small, it’s worth it.

This is what I’m talking about, when I say that kindness and compassion do not equate with ignorance, stupidity, or naivety. Being cynical does not make someone more intelligent or more worldly.

Kindness is not weakness.

Kindness is brave. Especially when you also know that your kindness might not be returned, may even be met with anger or cruelty. It’s reaching out with an open hand, knowing that it’s just as likely to be bitten as it is to be held.

Kindness is hard. If you can’t find it in yourself to be kind, then fine. But don’t make it more difficult for those that can.
